Her mother is deceased and she is an only child. Her grandfather has a half acre that he shares with two other people so there is nothing for Ann. A group of church women have provided a uniform and a few other items for her but she has no future without an education. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 390 Ann has excelled despite having very little support in any way. Her teachers feel that with an educational opportunity she will be very successful. |

Name: Audrey O. Gender: Female School: Starehe Girls School, start date 1/09 EFAC Student ID: 7-09s Student's Background: Audrey's father died in 2005. Her mother is very sick and her primary school has supported her in her basic needs and given her free boarding. She has no means of support after primary school. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 431 Audrey is number one in her class. She is an excellent actress and she is a class monitor. Audrey has the highest score on her KCPE of all our scholarship students in 2009. |

He is one of seven children and his parents find it difficult to provide the basic needs for their children. They are gone a good part of the year with their livestock. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 315 Benedict's teachers state that he is always ready to learn and expand his position. |

He lives with his grandparents who are very poor. Neither his mother, brothers nor sisters pursued an education after primary school despite good performance because their grandfather could not afford fees. Her father is a livestock farmer but the sale of his cows does not cover all of their expenses. The EFAC scholarship has given Charity an opportunity to achieve a better life. Her parents struggle to meet the family's basic needs. They depend on casual jobs within their village. Charity has been living in an Internally Displaced Person's Camp since March '08. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 303 Charity is a provisional student because her teacher feels that her move to the internally Displaced Person's Camp has affected her ability to perform. The teacher feels that she is much more capable than her score reflects. She has been accepted into a secondary school with lower standards than our girls' schools and it is our hope that she will qualify for one of our two schools next year. |

Name: Evans L. EFAC Student ID: 4-09r Gender: Male School: Rongai Boys School, start date 1/09 Student's Background: When Evan's parents passed away he was taken to be a herd's boy in Majani Mingi. In 2002 his uncle took him to his house and put him in class two. His uncle then went back and brought his brother who was also a herd's boy and his two sisters who were house girls to live with him and go to school. This was the beginning of free primary education in Kenya. Evan's uncle is a herdsman and does not make enough money to send these children to secondary school. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 333 Evans is a strong science student who will benefit from the excellent facilities at the Rongai Boys School. Free education, a compassionate uncle and a scholarship have given Evans a chance at a bright future. |

Gender: Female School: Vanessa Grant's Girls' School, EFAC start date 1/09 EFAC Student ID: 3-09pro Student's Background: Faith's family was displaced during the post election violence and they are now living in an Internally Displaced Persons facility. Her parents are currently unemployed. They are able to have basic needs provided for but there is no money for education. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 316 Faith was traumatized due to the post election violence but still managed to succeed at school and pass her exam with over 300 points. She has been chosen to receive a provisional scholarship with the hope that she will move to one of our more highly qualified schools next year. |

There are nine children in the family and Francis's mother has struggled to take care of all nine children. Fortunately some villagers have helped the family but only two of the siblings have graduated from high school due to lack of fees. Villagers had a fund raising and they raised his initial school fees but not enough for tuition. I want to improve my mum's life, and I know that God has a purpose for me." |

Her mother is a nursery school teacher and her father does casual work when it is available. Her parents cannot afford school fees. She should do very well in high school. |

John now attends a boarding primary school but had to drop out for 2007 due to family illness. Despite being traumatized he returned to school in 2008 and did well. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 394 John is a head boy at school and has scored extremely well in his KCPE and his grades. He is an extremely good candidate as he has survived the post election violence and still excelled. |

Gender: Male School: Kaaga Boys School, start date 1/09 EFAC Student ID: 6-09k Student's Background: Joseph and his five siblings live with their single mother and she has a hard time providing for their basic needs. He graduated from eighth grade in 2007 but was unable to find scholarship assistance. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 338 Joseph has never given up the hope of attending secondary school. He has shown great perseverance in his continuing struggle to find the funds to attend school. EFAC applauds his drive and motivation. |

His mother is a laborer but has no funds to spare for school fees. Despite the difficult and traumatizing living circumstances Joyce has prevailed and been accepted into the competitive Vanessa Grant school. With a good living environment at the school and proper instruction it is expected that she will excel. |

His mother has provided for him and his sister through her tailoring. His sister was able to attain a scholarship for high school and has just graduated. Kevin is a motivated young boy who has worked hard to earn his admittance to Rongai Boys School. They are quite poor so Mercy lives with a guardian who can better meet her needs. Mercy has excelled being one of the best three pupils in the school. She has no other means of support other than her salary so cannot afford to pay her own fees for high school. His mother was admitted to a hospital for mental problems and has never recovered. Samwel's older brother and sister had to drop out of primary school due to lack of fees. Samwel and his other brother were able to take advantage of the free education program in Kenya but in 2004 had to drop out because of starvation. In 2005 a teacher took Samwel and his brother in and provided for them. They have lived through the generosity of this teacher until now. His brother received a scholarship for secondary school last year and now Samwel is seeking a scholarship for his schooling. Seven of the children are working to herd their fifteen cows and eleven goats. Sandra's mother is a primary school teacher and is the only bread winner for the entire family. There are no funds available for secondary school. The mother does some dress making but does not have the proper equipment to make a living. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 399 Sophia is first in her class despite having no light to study by and not enough food to sustain her for a full day. She is a very impressive young girl succeeding despite the odds. |

Her mother works as house help. Her family is from a tribe that practices fgm. Teya ran away to avoid this rite. The boarding primary school rescued her and provided her with safety and an education. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 380 Teya is an incredibly brave young girl who was forced into an early marriage and managed to escape and excel despite the trauma of her early childhood. |

Her parents are peasant farmers whose home was destroyed by fire during the post election violence. They are now living in an Internally Displaced Person's Camp. They receive aid from the Red Cross. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 319 Wagaki's teacher states "She is a hard working, social, and polite girl. She leads her class as a monitor. She is very bright and active. Wagaki did not qualify for either of our chosen girls schools but her teacher feels that she has been traumatized by the post election violence and her score does not reflect her abilities. EFAC is providing her a scholarship with the belief that she will qualify for one of our schools in the future. |

She is a tailor. The guardian is not able to pay for secondary school fees. William's teachers state that he is an above average good and cooperative boy. He has been a server in the church and given the opportunity will do well in high school. I am the eldest in the family and with high hopes of educating my younger brothers and sisters in the future." |

Gender: Male School: Kaaga Boys School, start date 1/09 EFAC Student ID: 5-09k Student's Background: Wyclyffe is from the Rift Valley and lives with his parents but has a guardian who helps to feed and clothe him. His parents do casual labor when it is available. The government provides for his school fees and books. Wyclyffe has great concerns about the uncertainty of his future. Secondary school is the opportunity he needs to break his cycle of poverty. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 327 The headmaster of Wyclyffe's primary school states: "He always scores above 300 marks and does serious studies. He was chosen as head prefect for his class. He relates well with others and is generally focused in school. |

Name: Yiamoi K. Gender: Female School: Vanessa Grant's Girls' School, EFAC start date 1/09 EFAC Student ID: 9-09m Student's Background: Yiamoi's father is deceased and her mother is a pastoralist. Yiamoi is one of eight children and while her mother can provide basic needs she is unable to pay for school fees. An EFAC scholarship provides Yiamoi with the possibility to break the cycle of poverty and to make changes in the lives of her family and community. Kenyan Standardized test score (KCPE): 353 Yiamoi's teachers rank her high in all areas of performance. Although her mother is a pastoralist she is very interested in Yiamoi gaining an education. This support is culturally unusual and will help the girl to succeed. |
